Selection Guide for Outdoor Forklift Tires – Part 2

Outdoor Forklift Tires Need to Be Rugged and Weatherproof

In our previous blog, we discussed selection criteria for indoor forklift tires. Here, we’ll discuss the forklift tire types used in outdoor applications. In general, outdoor forklifts tend to be larger, can carry more weight, and are subject to the whims of ground conditions and weather. Those conditions call for a completely different set of tire choices than those of indoor forklifts. Typically, outdoor applications call for pneumatic tires.

Air vs. Solid Pneumatic Tires

Pneumatic forklift tires come in two flavors: air pneumatic tires and solid pneumatic tires. Air pneumatic tires are similar to typical car or truck tires, made of durable rubber and filled with air. Forklifts equipped with pneumatic tires offer a less bumpy ride over uneven surfaces, gravel, or terrain. They can also be filled with foam to offer some of the advantages of solid pneumatic tires–like resistance to puncture or deflation–while avoiding the higher cost of solid pneumatics. Air pneumatics are the tire of choice for most outdoor yard, port, or lot applications as they offer a good combination of durability, longevity, maneuverability, value, and smooth ride.

Solid pneumatic tires are a misnomer because they’re not pneumatic but are made from solid rubber. The walls and ground contact surfaces are made of durable rubber-encasing steel bands, while the interior is softer to offer more cushioning for the forklift operator.  They are pricier but are the way to go if your forklift drives over nails, metal debris, or sharp rocks. They can’t be punctured and won’t deflate, but they offer a harder ride than air pneumatics. Lumber yards, recycling facilities, and construction sites are typical applications for forklifts equipped with solid pneumatic forklifts.

Using Cushion Tires on an Outdoor Forklift

Yes, cushion forklift tires can be used in certain outdoor applications. This is the case if the yard or outdoor environment has a smooth asphalt surface. Many combination indoor/outdoor distribution centers or warehouses fall under this category. The longer lifespan, superior maneuverability, and smoother ride of a cushion tire forklift offer a clear advantage. Traction cushion tires rather than smooth cushion tires are often a better choice for outdoor use.

Determining Pneumatic Tire Size

Pneumatic tire sizes are represented at Width x Rim Diameter. Thus, a tire size of 7.0×15 would have a tread width of 7.0 in. and a rim diameter of 15 in.

Inspection and Maintenance of Pneumatic Tires

Like all parts of your forklift, tires should be inspected at the beginning of each shift. Check the pressure of air pneumatic tires regularly and refill them if they are below the manufacturer’s recommended inflation pressure. Check tires for chunking (missing pieces), splits or cracks (mostly caused by age or overheating), flat spots (caused by improper storage or poor operation), or wear. Generally, tires have a wear indicator or safety line that tells you when the tire has become so worn it needs to be replaced.

Thoughtful operation of your forklift will also extend the life of its tires. When possible, avoid driving over debris, sharp objects, and road hazards like potholes that could damage your tires. Need help keeping your floors clear of debris and dirt? A scrubber or sweeper may be the perfect solution. Avoid hard braking and spinning the forklift’s tires. Be sure all operators are adequately trained on the proper operation of forklifts.
