How Narrow is Your Narrow Aisle?

Your reach truck may be designed for tight spaces, but with various aisle configurations labeled “narrow aisle,” right-sizing your equipment is critical for success. There are three accepted aisle width categories:

  • Wide aisle > 10′
  • Narrow aisle = 9’
  • Very narrow aisle (VNA) < 9’

To ensure your warehouse vehicle will safely perform as you need it to, use this formula to measure the turning radius and maneuverability required using your most narrow aisle as the base.

Narrow Aisle Maneuverability:

  • Measure the forklift “head” length (from the back of the truck to front of load backrest)
  • Add the load length, i.e., pallet length
  • Add at least 6” for pallet overhang (add more if using oversized pallets)
  • Add 12” for maneuverability*

*The 12’ measurement for maneuverability is the default for standard selective pallet rack structures. If your forklift equipment is single reach or stand-up, you may need less than the standard. Conversely, IC (internal combustion) reach trucks are generally wider and may require a more significant turning and operational radius. Additionally, deep-reach vehicles can require 12” to 18” of additional aisle space.

The Apex team will make sure that the right vehicle rolls into your facility. No matter how narrow your aisles... we’re here for you. Call Apex today to learn more about CLARK reach trucks and VNA warehouse vehicles.
